A Dental Restoration Might Be Required to Treat a Large Cavity

Posted .

Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day are important. If you do not follow your basic oral hygiene routine, you could experience several consequences. One of the most common problems is tooth decay. If decay is not treated a cavity could develop that is too large to be repaired with a simple dental filling.

To effectively treat a tooth in this condition, our dentist, Dr. Theodore Gehrig might recommend a dental crown.  A crown will cover the entire surface of the tooth, and replace with enamel with gold, a metal alloy, or dental grade porcelain.

The dentist will first start by removing the remaining tooth enamel. This leaves behind an anchoring abutment composed of healthy dentin, that will support your dental crown.

After the crown has been created at a professional dental lab, you will need to return for a second appointment to have Dr. Theodore Gehrig cement the dental crown onto your tooth. This will restore the function of your tooth.
